For Wanderburg Build 0.9.10, pick a Captain by the drawback you can play around, not by an invented tier list. Randwerk officially made five named Captain penalties lighter: PatchyThePirate, Kapitalstus Maximus, Huntress, Tankbert, and Duelist. The fastest useful choice is to read the current loadout card, identify its cost, then choose the run plan that makes that cost least dangerous.
Quick answer: which Captain should I choose?
There is no official 0.9.10 ranking that proves one Captain is best for every biome, vehicle, or module offer. Choose PatchyThePirate only after deciding that enemy Cannon pressure is a risk you can manage; choose Kapitalstus Maximus only when the reduced Gold penalty still leaves your unlock plan comfortable. Huntress, Tankbert, and Duelist are most readable when you know whether your run depends more on ability timing, Nitro recovery, or safe boosting.
Use this short selection check: name the next run's main danger, name the action you expect to repeat, then reject any Captain whose stated cost directly weakens that action. For example, a plan that repeatedly boosts to escape pressure should not casually accept a boost-related risk. This is more useful than copying a name from a clip made before the latest hotfix.
The five Wanderburg Captains changed in 0.9.10
The official September 12 hotfix reduces the severity of five listed trade-offs. It does not call these five the full roster, so this is a current, source-backed change guide rather than an “all Captains” database. The table states only the changed line and the decision it should trigger before a run.
| Captain | Official 0.9.10 change | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| PatchyThePirate | Enemy Cannon bonus damage: 50% → 25% | Whether the next route can safely handle Cannon pressure |
| Kapitalstus Maximus | Gold penalty: -30% → -15% | Whether the run still supports the purchases or unlocks you need |
| Huntress | Extra ability cooldown: 50% → 40% | Whether your plan relies on frequent active abilities |
| Tankbert | Nitro regeneration penalty: 50% slower → 30% slower | Whether escape and repositioning depend on repeated boosts |
| Duelist | Extra damage while boosting: 50% → 20% | Whether you can avoid taking hits during boost windows |
The important comparison is the direction of change, not an imagined power score. Each listed cost became less punishing, but a smaller penalty is not the same thing as proof that the Captain fits your inventory. Read the live card, then use the matching section below to turn that number into a run decision.
PatchyThePirate: plan around Cannon pressure
PatchyThePirate's listed Enemy Cannon bonus damage was cut from 50% to 25% in 0.9.10. That makes the stated Cannon risk materially smaller than it was in the previous build, but it does not erase it or prove a Cannon-focused player build. Pick this Captain only if you are ready to prioritize movement, cover, target order, or another current answer to enemy Cannon fire.
The practical question is not “does Patchy make Cannons strong?” The official note describes damage from enemy Cannons, so use the Captain card to confirm the exact live wording and judge the defensive cost first. If your test run repeatedly ends while crossing Cannon fire, record the biome, difficulty, vehicle, and the moment you took the hit before concluding that the Captain caused it.
Kapitalstus Maximus: count the Gold cost before committing
Kapitalstus Maximus now has a documented Gold penalty of -15%, improved from -30%. The useful takeaway is economic: the cost is less severe, not that the Captain guarantees a faster unlock path or more total power. Choose this option only after checking what your next meaningful purchase or progression goal requires.
Make a small plan before the run: identify the unlock, the displayed price, and the Gold source you expect to rely on. If the plan already leaves little margin, a penalty—however reduced—still matters more than a vague promise of a future synergy. After the run, compare the displayed Gold outcome with the live Captain text rather than trying to infer a hidden formula from one result.
Huntress: separate active timing from automatic attacks
Huntress's extra ability cooldown time fell from 50% to 40% in the official patch. That change improves the stated timing drawback, but it does not establish that any specific auto-attack, Arrow, or ability setup is now the best. Start by deciding whether your survival plan needs active casts on a tight cadence or whether it can win with more patient use.
If abilities are your emergency answer, test one clear situation: the same difficulty, the same selected ability, and a similar threat before and after a cooldown window. Note whether the missed cast was caused by timing, target selection, movement, or an unrelated bug. This prevents a Captain choice from receiving credit for a module, Crew, Artifact, or encounter effect.
For an automatic-attack plan, do not assume a cooldown change is a direct damage buff. The current Captain card and your actual offers determine the build, while the patch confirms only the reduced extra cooldown. Keep a separate note for a community-reported interaction until you can reproduce it in the same build.
Tankbert and Duelist: make boost risk visible
Tankbert's Nitro regeneration penalty is now 30% slower instead of 50% slower, while Duelist's extra damage taken during a boost is now 20% instead of 50%. Both changes make boost-related costs lighter, but they ask different questions. Tankbert is about how quickly Nitro returns after use; Duelist is about whether you are exposed while boosting.
For Tankbert, watch the gap between two boosts when escaping or changing position. For Duelist, watch whether the boost path crosses damage rather than merely whether the boost feels fast. A clean test uses the same vehicle, comparable map pressure, and a deliberate reason for each boost instead of measuring a chaotic late-run escape.
How to keep a Captain recommendation trustworthy
Use three labels when sharing Captain information. “Officially confirmed” is for a value or change in Randwerk's announcement; “site-tested” is for a repeatable observation with build, setup, and evidence; “community-reported” is for a player question that still needs reproduction. These labels let the page answer a search without pretending that a discussion thread has the same weight as a patch note.
For a useful test, capture the build number, Captain, vehicle, biome, difficulty, starting modules, relevant Crew or Artifact, and the exact action you are checking. Repeat the observation when practical, then state what did not stay controlled. A short clip or screenshot can document the result, but it should accompany the setup rather than replace it.
This approach also makes later updates cheaper to review. If Randwerk changes one Captain, you can retest the affected route instead of rebuilding a fictional global tier list. Use Modules for confirmed arsenal changes, Vehicles, Biomes, and Unlocks for persistent-progression questions, and Updates for the full patch sequence.
Sources and version boundary
The Captain changes and all five before-and-after values on this page come from Randwerk's official 0.9.10 Steam announcement, checked September 14, 2026. Steam's store description confirms that Captains are among the unlockable options that expand later-run strategy, but it does not publish a complete Captain roster or every effect. Community reports may identify a question worth testing; they are not used here as proof of a Captain's full mechanics.
