How to Use Front Barracks in Wanderburg

Learn to use Wanderburg Front Barracks in 0.9.14: separate summoning from targeting, time the active ability, choose support, and diagnose idle allied units.

Use Front Barracks when you can keep a reachable enemy in front of your castle long enough for its allies and active ability to matter. Equip it in a Front slot, bring the target into view, activate deliberately, and watch separately for a unit appearing, acquiring a target, and landing damage. In 0.9.14 allies are immune to fire, stun, and knockback, but the official patch does not say it fixed idle summons or changed their targeting. If a unit follows without attacking, diagnose that symptom before spending upgrades on damage.

Start with the slot and a safe target

Front Barracks belongs to the Front module group in the community roster. A Front slot used by Barracks cannot simultaneously hold another Front choice in that same slot; check your current vehicle's visible layout before copying a loadout. Begin the learning run against a single slower enemy with open space around it. This makes the unit's movement and any attack easier to see than an Overtime crowd with many effects on screen.

Approach at a speed that lets the target remain in front for a short window. Trigger the Barracks active while there is a real enemy to engage, then keep enough room to turn away if the exchange is poor. Note whether the action created a new ally or a direct attack animation on your installed version. The official balance posts mention active base damage and later an active buff, but do not publish a complete control manual, so use the live tooltip to confirm the exact action.

Separate the active ability from automatic allied attacks

Randwerk increased Front Barracks active base damage from 200 to 250 in 0.9.7. Hotfix 0.9.9 fixed diminishing-damage upgrades and buffed the active ability again; it also made allied melee units move faster toward targets. These changes support using the active when a target is actually reachable. They do not establish a new passive attack interval, a guaranteed hit, or a universal best upgrade order.

When evaluating an upgrade, decide which of two failures you saw. If the active reaches the intended enemy but does too little, an active-damage or relevant scaling option may be worth testing. If allies never make contact, more damage on those allies will not solve their travel or target problem. Repeating the same simple encounter after one change is more informative than changing Captain, vehicle, module level, and Artifact together.

The 0.9.14 patch adds immunity to fire, stun, and knockback for allied units, which Randwerk says were already invincible. That protects their continuity in a crowded fight; it is not evidence that they now obey a manual attack order. An older video in which allied units are interrupted by these effects is therefore a poor guide to the present build. A current clip that shows movement but no attack remains a separate targeting or contact question.

Why are my Barracks allies following without attacking?

Run this short observation in a safe part of a current 0.9.14 run:

  1. Confirm Front Barracks, its level, and the active key on the live loadout. Trigger it once and check whether allied units actually appear.
  2. Keep one visible enemy nearby without immediately driving past it. Watch whether the allies move toward that enemy or simply trail the castle.
  3. Look for a target marker. A September 24 player reply describes crossed swords and a small white beam as a target clue; treat the marker as a community observation, not an official targeting command.
  4. If there is a marker but no damage, record whether the unit reaches the enemy. If there is no marker, capture both the unit and nearby enemy in one clip.

This sequence distinguishes failure to summon, failure to select a target, failure to reach it, and failure to register damage. In the same Steam discussion, a player reports allies sometimes following the castle instead of fighting. Another recent weapons-bug report on the community hub mentions idle soldiers among several symptoms. Neither report proves that every Barracks run is broken, so include the exact reproduction before calling a run unwinnable.

Build around contact rather than a promised tier rank

Treat Front Barracks as a forward engagement tool. Give it time to reach a target and reserve movement to leave once the active window ends. A separate automatic or side-facing attack can continue contributing while you reposition, but verify that the chosen vehicle actually has the required slot. The Modules guide maps Front, Side, Top, and Back options without pretending that all vehicles carry the same layout.

For a candidate Captain, read the current tooltip for a bonus that really applies to allied units or active abilities. A player's build account describes an Empress summon approach, but it is a personal result from an earlier build, not a measured 0.9.14 recommendation. Test it against a familiar neutral Captain under similar difficulty before spending scarce Silver or declaring a synergy. The same principle applies to Artifacts: a melee, summon, or cooldown label alone does not prove it affects this module's specific attack.

If you die before allies act, create space before buying another damage multiplier. If your active connects but does little against a boss, compare another upgrade or damage source. If the failure occurs only in Overtime, repeat the basic test in an ordinary encounter; recent patches changed Overtime enemies separately.

Front Barracks versus Side Barracks

The two names identify different slots. An idle unit reported with Side Barracks does not automatically show that Front Barracks has the same fault, and a successful Front Barracks active does not verify Side Barracks. Record the exact module when comparing results. This matters especially on vehicles whose available slots differ from the loadout in a video or forum post.

The official hotfixes quoted above name Front Barracks for its active-damage and scaling changes. The 0.9.14 immunity rule applies to allied units, so it can be relevant to both modules, but it still says nothing about how either module chooses targets. Keep those scopes separate when deciding whether a patch resolved your problem. For Artifact compatibility and trigger checks, continue with the Artifacts guide instead of assuming every summon benefits from every melee card.

What to include in a useful bug report

Capture the build, vehicle, Captain, biome, Front Barracks level, key press, visible enemy, and the next few seconds. Note the target marker and damage. If the same setup worked earlier, include when it changed. A clip of the sequence is more useful than a still image.

Do not delete local progress or disable Steam Cloud simply to test an unverified fix. First update the game, restart once, and repeat the safe single-target observation. If it reproduces, send the evidence through the official Wanderburg community channels. The Performance guide is for freezes and crashes; a live unit that does not attack is a gameplay behavior report.

Sources and version boundary

The active-damage, scaling, allied-movement, and immunity changes come from Randwerk's official hotfixes through 0.9.14, reviewed September 27, 2026. The target-marker description and idle-unit symptom come from a linked player discussion; the Captain example is a separate player account. This site has not measured Barracks DPS or completed a controlled 0.9.14 Barracks run. Follow the current tooltip when its exact control or upgrade wording differs from older reports.
