The Wanderburg Steam demo was retired on September 8, 2026, when Early Access launched. To play Wanderburg today, use the live Windows PC Steam version; it contains the current content, update path, and community support route. Earlier demos and playtests remain useful historical context for understanding how the game evolved.

The current answer: the demo was retired at launch

The Steam Community launch announcement says that Wanderburg is out now and that the team is retiring its Steam demo that day. The stated reason is important: the game had changed so much since March that the demo did not represent the Early Access release. That is the clearest available answer to a player searching for the demo after launch.

The launch announcement explains why: the game changed substantially from its March demo before release. If you came from an old video, use it to recognize the moving-castle idea, then start the live Steam build for the present-day version. The Steam guide gives the direct install route and the beginner guide turns the current core loop into a first-run plan.

If the goal is to play Wanderburg now, use the official Steam availability guide. If the goal is a problem with the current game, use Performance and Crash Fixes. Both pages explain why a current Steam installation has a clearer version boundary than a historical test build.

Why old demo advice can mislead

Demos are useful snapshots, but they are snapshots. A pre-launch build can have different balance, content, bug behavior, controls, menus, or technical constraints from the release that follows it. The launch announcement specifically says the demo no longer represented the released version, so this is not a minor editorial caveat; it is an official warning about applicability.

This matters most when a video offers a “best build,” crash fix, or early route. Keep the broad lesson—move the castle, consume targets, build siege machinery—but apply details only after checking build and date. Launch hotfix 0.9.6 changed Top Mortar, Back Turret, Tankbert, Fire Mage, enemy composition, and Dark Tower health; 0.9.7–0.9.14 then changed more modules, vehicles, controls, achievements, Artifacts, rerolls, boss rewards, and Overtime.

The 0.9.6 launch hotfix gives a concrete example of why, while the current review boundary is 0.9.14. Those changes do not invalidate every demo explanation, but detailed pre-launch values and routes cannot be treated as live data.

What the playtest history tells us

Before launch, Wanderburg had a closed playtest and a public demo period. A February 2026 GamesMarkt report described over 250,000 wishlists and 126,000 participants in the most recent closed playtest. It also said that a demo would be available through March 2 during Steam Next Fest. That reporting establishes the historical context behind the many playtest and demo searches.

The official launch post later makes the current status clear: Early Access replaces the demo as the product players should evaluate. The team thanked playtesters and said the live game had come a long way from early playtests and the demo. Those two statements fit together. The test periods were valuable feedback stages; they are not evidence that the same test entry point is still available.

For a player who remembers a playtest, compare that memory with the current Steam build and use the beginner guide for the first-run loop. Randwerk published its Early Access roadmap on September 30, 2026, following the launch post's promise. The Updates hub explains the planned Q4 2026 and 2027 work separately from features already available in the live build.

Use the current build for a crash or freeze

“Wanderburg demo crash fix” is especially likely to mix old and current information. Before trying a technical fix, establish the product and version. If Steam is installing or launching the current Wanderburg app, record the live build and start with safe checks such as restarting Steam and verifying the installed files. If the problem belongs to an old demo executable, the original context may no longer be supported or reproducible.

For a crash, freeze, or missing sound, first update Steam, restart Steam and the game, verify files, and reproduce once. The 0.9.6 launch record addressed Ground Fire, wheels, Ram, selection, map boundaries, and audio; 0.9.7 and 0.9.8 later changed Graphics API handling and added official crash launch options. The performance guide explains the current sequence.

The 0.9.6 announcement directs players to Discord to report bugs or look for existing reports. Use the official link listed in Community and Language Reference, include the current build and a concise reproduction, and keep a demo-era issue clearly separate from a live-release issue.

A practical way to evaluate historical content

When you encounter a demo or playtest video, read it in layers. First, identify the date and whether it says demo, playtest, or Early Access. Second, separate durable concepts from changeable numbers. The official premise of a moving fortress that consumes targets and grows an arsenal is durable. A particular damage result, unlock order, map behavior, or crash workaround is likely version-dependent.

Third, look for a current official source. Steam Community announcements are the best place to check launch changes, while the Steam store is the purchase and availability record. If no current source confirms an old detail, it should not be promoted as a live-game fact. This protects players from an easy but costly mistake: treating a high-view video as a patch note.

The Updates hub keeps the award, launch, 0.9.6–0.9.14 hotfixes, achievement rebalance, launch recap, and September 30 roadmap together. Use it to place a historical video on the timeline before relying on it.

Sources and review date

The demo-retirement statement is from the Wanderburg launch announcement on Steam Community, published September 8, 2026. Pre-launch demo and closed-playtest context comes from the GamesMarkt report. The demo-status and roadmap references were checked against Randwerk's official announcement feed on October 19, 2026; the reviewed gameplay build remains 0.9.14.

If Randwerk or Sidekick Publishing publishes a new official demo or playtest, this page should be updated with that direct announcement. Send the link and date to [email protected].
